Background: (Joe)
When I first got hooked into BBS's it was on a MacIntosh
System that had this really neat chatroom that allowed
all users on the system to chat to each other at the same
time. I enjoyed this so much that I started a BBS of my
own using the Spitfire Software by Mike Woltz. I was really
pleased with everything about Spitfire except the fact that
it did not have a chatroom. I searched high and low for a
chatroom that would work with Spitfire, but alas I could find
none...
So I wrote one and this is it...
Background: (Jason)
I came accross a neat little game called "Kylon's World" by
Joe Vidunas, registered it, and became friends with Joe in
the process (thusly placing both of our phone companies into
the Fortune 500). I threw my two bits in with Joe as far as
a few recomendations to Kylon's World, HE ACTUALLY RESPONDED!
I then asked him to write a simple ChatDoor for me (as my BBS
was going to 2 lines) son'uv'a'gun already had one. One year
later and I dropped the BullsEye Software Developement idea
and joined up with Joe... made some bigtime changes to Kylon's
Bar...
And here they are...
What it does: Kylon's Bar is modeled after the chatrooms included with the
more sophisticated and (expensive) BBS softwares. It
allows all users on your BBS to talk to each other at
the same time. It also has sysop configurable actions
that tend to really liven up the conversations in your
chatroom. Full ANSI and RIP are supported in the actions
which allows very creative discussions full of color and
cursor control. Kylon's Bar follows the DoorChat standard
which allows chat with other DoorChat compatible programs
like Kylon's World ver 2.42 or greater.
How to set it up:
1) Make a directory of your choice somewhere that all your BBS nodes
can access.
2) Copy all the files in KYBAR###.ZIP to that directory.
3) Change Directory to the the one you have copied the files into.
4) Run the program KYBSETUP.EXE to set up the comport parameters and
drop file paths for each node.
Kylon's Bar needs to know for each node:
1) If the comport needs hardware flow control RTS/CTS.
2) If the comport IRQ is standard, fossil controlled
or an alternate(IRQ2-IRQ15).
3) Standard or Alternate UART Hex address.
4) Full Path to the DOOR.SYS drop file for the Node.
Note: Kylon's Bar only reads DOOR.SYS, if your BBS
software does not create a DOOR.SYS file then
obtain a doorfile converter and use it to create one.
KYBSETUP.EXE allows you to configure up to 200 different nodes
and also asks that you specify a user name for your use as
a local node in the door.
5) In order to call the door from your bbs use the following or
similar commands.
c:
cd \KYBAR {you must change to the main DoorChat directory to run it}
Kybar.exe n {n is node number up to 200}
7) To run the game locally simply change directory to the main
Kylon's Bar directory and type... KYBAR.EXE with no command line.
8) If you want two or more DoorChat standard programs to chat together
you must include a set environment variable in your autoexec.bat of
EACH bbs machine like this:
SET DOORCHAT=C:\DOORCHAT valid directory please
9) Copy the file "PROFILE.DAT" into that SET directory
10) Assuming you are running a multi-node BBS, (would only make sense) you
MUST have SHARE loaded, or network sharing (Windows automatically does
this for you so don't panic).
11) NOTE: The unregistered version IS NOT CRIPPLED !!! There is only a 10
second delay at the beginning and end of the door !!!
DigiBoard and Fossil Support:
Kylon's Bar will make use of your fossil driver which allows for
operation of the game on DigiBoard systems. Simply press enter once
at the IRQ parameter of the KYBSETUP program to switch the IRQ from STAN
to FOSS. Do this for each node that will be using the fossil driver.
Command Line options:
The only command line options Kybar.exe recognizes is the node number
or an alternate user name for local play. There are no other options
and if the command line is ommitted it will run in local mode using
the user name in your kybsetup.
Setting up your ACTIONS:
The ACTION.LST file included in the archive contains a good start
for some humerous actions to have in your chatroom. It is a standard
text file and may be edited with your favorite text editor.
The format is as follows:
HUG {the key word for the action}
Isn't that cute! {the reply sent to sending user}
@ is
hugging
$ close. {the text sent to other users}
N {action adult nature Y or N}
How it works: Supposing Joe User is in the chatroom and types
HUG Jane
what will appear to him and the other users will be
Joe User is hugging Jane close.
Also note the ansi codes to change the color of 'hugging'.
Macro Legend: @ - Originators name
$ - Who the action is being performed on
& - him / her / them
% - his / her / their (singular)
^ - his / hers / theirs (plural)
# - himself / herself / themself
* - he / she / they
THEM, THEIR, THEIRS, THEMSELF and THEY are used only when the user has not
edited their profile and identified themselves as a MALE or FEMALE...
Q:
WHAT THE HECK IS THIS "DOORCHAT" THING ?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
A:
"DOORCHAT" is our answer to better DOOR to DOOR relationships... any doors
written with DOORCHAT are able to talk to each other (just like the big boys)
This is a Turbo Pascal UNIT file (that is FREEWARE !!!!!!!) for people that
are interested in writting their own BBS doors. It works with any current
door-writting utils that you may already be using like JPDOOR etc. However
this is not the only file needed to write a door.. you still need the other
files for COM routines etc... or you can make your own. For more info on our
DOORCHAT just get ahold of us by any of the locations listed below in the
distribution section of this text.
Distribution:
These files may be copied and distributed (you are incouraged to do so)
as long as:
1. No fee of any sort is incurred for the distribution.
2. The files and the documentation are kept together in an archive.
3. The copyright notices are not removed or modified in any portion
or product of the software
